There's actually two seperate but connected issues here...

1)  Reducing or eliminating our dependence on foreign fuel.
2)  Reducing or eliminating harmful pollutants

You can choose which you feel is most important and it's possible to solve both at the same time.  But keep in mind that until we stop using coal and oil to run electric power plants, you WILL NOT be solving issue #2 by switching to electric cars.  The energy is just making an extra stop before it gets to your car, and it's a dirty stop.

I've been tooting that horn for quite some time    But the public fears what the public fears I guess.

Been awhile since I've touched this topic.

Kub pretty much hits the nail on the head with everything said about our dependency on fossil fuels and foreign oil. Nuclear power could very well be an alternative source to cut down on the usage of fossil fuels. But in a lot of peoples eyes they see another cheranoble or the possibility of a terrorist attack on these nuclear facilities.

There are how ever many other alternative power sources. Up in the North Sea they have built a wind farm of 300+ wind electric generators that can power something in the sorts of 75% of a country because the wind is vicious and never stops in the north sea.

Austrailia see's over 300+ days of sunlight a year. They have developed a tower that is thousands of feet in the air. On the ground are hundreds of glass panels. Heat gets trapped under these panels and rushes for the tower to exit (heat rises) And spins turbines as it enters the tower. Which can supply enormous amounts of energy.

New York City has developed underwater turbines that use the moons gravity and Manhattens vicious river currents to spin them and supply power to near by stores and houses.

And the highlight of the alternative energy sources. England has developed the worlds first working (still working on it though) fusion reactor. They have actually been able to successfully create fusion and get energy. They can't keep it sustained for long periods of time. But it goes to show you how far technology has come. Once this fusion reactor is perfected and can be mass produced. You will see the worlds new energy sources.

On the Democratic debates the other night, one of the lesser known candidates (I don't even remember his name) claimed we have the technology now with wind power to cut our dependency on foreign oil in 5 years, and all fossil fuels in 10 years.  My guess is, even if he's correct, he'll be labeled a kook and won't sniff the nomination.
