Consumers get $180 million in Microsoft settlementThe settlement covers Iowans who purchased Microsoft software between May 18, 1994 and June 30, 2006. Customers who wish to receive their reimbursements from Microsoft must do so before the December 14 deadline.
Individual consumers can claim up to $200 without a proof of purchase, however, any amount exceeding $200 must be backed with supporting documentation.
Hmm, how much should I claim...
I know I have got a number of MS products over the years.
If everyone eligible applied for reimbursements, the nearly $180 million total would be the largest settlement ever in an Iowa court case. But if Iowans are like consumers in states where similar cases have been settled, much less than half the total would be claimed.
As a result, Microsoft agreed to pay half the unclaimed amount to Iowa schools in the form of vouchers that can be redeemed for computer equipment or software.
That's good.
