How was it?

Oh and here is the portal ending song. Download link there too if you want it. -Jonathan Coulton
(Could always extract it from the Cache file on your hard drive too)

The outdoor environment was awesome. Gotta love the car. Hunters were really fun to fight. Fending off the striders+hunters at the end was awesome! I always enjoyed killing zombies and figuring my way around those parts with padlocked doors or boarded up hallways. The vorts kick some ass. Antlion cave was cool. Lot of health in there by killing the grubs. Wink
I thought they did an awesome job with the Alyx and Eli events. Magnusson was an awesome character. And he has to mention that little event at black mesa.

Gman part
"There was a time they cared nothing for miss Vance. When their only experience of humanity was a crowbar coming at them down a steal corridor." I laughed at that part. haha
*remembers killing Vort slaves in HL1

Unlike Episode 1, the end's timing did not catch me off guard in EP2. I was really satisfied and felt as if I had played through a full game, even if the play time was similar. (With EP1 I was surprised when the end came. I didn't feel I had completed much regarding the story. And the finale was killing 1 strider and boarding a train? I guess it was the best place to put the bookmark for that section of story.)
EP2 felt like a mini HL2 again but without as many combine fights (It was away from the city after all). The story really got interesting in this one as well.

Portal was a completely new way to play. Very fun. I'll probably replay some of the levels quite a few times. Can't wait to see if people make cool additional maps to play.

I just beat both Portal and HL2: Episode 2 tonight.

I enjoyed the second episode for the most part, I did feel there should have been new weapons added (getting the Magnuson weapon at the very end didn't feel like a "new weapon" to me)   But the last fight was very awesome, I agree the ending of the first episode was sorta.......eh?

Hunters are very nasty, especially if you just emptied all your ammo and realized there were gas canisters in full supply in the room next to you....  cheesy

From a challenge standpoint, I felt the game was lacking.   The vorts pretty much do all the work if you aren't chomping at the bit to blow away everything that moves.   Some of the puzzles just felt like a re-hashing of HL2 puzzles.  I didn't like the cussing in this game either.

Best lines from the Vortigons:
"mmmmm ripe pinatas!"
"I must return to the honorable work under The Magnuson"

That is correct folks, "The Magnuson."  Wow, that rules.

I loved the line about the crowbar coming down the hallway, that ruled haha.
There is a ton more but it is late so I'll have to replay it.

I liked the commentaries throughout the game, I eventually stopped clicking on them because they were giving away what was about to happen though, guess I'll catch the rest of them on the flipside.  One of Merle Dandridge's (Alyx) quotes was about when the game came out she was curious what people thought so she went on some forum board where someone posted a pic of them with her, and the second post was "WOW, SHE IS UGLY" heh, thought that was funny.    Eh, she's actually pretty good looking imho.  I find it amusing how some of her lines in the game sound like she's pretty much ready to rape Gordon to death.

Plot:   They did a lot more in this one than the first, but I still felt they could have brought out a little more, they're gonna have to let a lot of cats out of the bag in the third one if it is going to be the last of the HL series.   I wish there would have been more Gman action in the game, he's just so weird, and he's been in all the games but there's virtually nothing revealed about him, bah.   If he doesn't get a lot of airtime in the third I will be a sad panda.

Portal:   Absolutely mind-blowingly awesome puzzles to figure out and play through.   I peeked into the "advanced versions" of the maps and promptly exited out.   I actually had a headache from the first night of playing this game.   I do like how they integrated the plotline of this game with HL.  I loved the computer's lines, they were really funny but well executed (sarcastic but still mono-tone computer-type voice).

"If you fail, you will receive an unsatisfactory rating, followed by death."

The cake references throughout the game are good too, I'm glad they added humor in HL2: Ep2 and Portal.

On one hand I want them to spill the beans with the HL plot but on the other hand I still want there to be mystery. They said EP3 is the end of this story arch (combine on earth/citadel?). But not the end of HL. After EP3 they said they would get feedback and think about what do to next (episodes or full game). EP4 is in the works already from another studio. Would be awesome to know the G-mans real name since no one has mentioned it yet (and his employers).

It's funny listening to the commentary to hear some people talk stiff, just reading a script, and others (like the voice actors) being really animated and not monotone with their voice. I think merle dandridge did a great job. Same with Ellen McLain. I've never wanted to hit someone more (Stalemate. YOU'RE ALL LOSERS!). She did the combine overwatch voice, TF2 announcer and GlaDOS in portal (and sung the song at the end).

I've been working on the Portal extra stuff. Have the advanced 6 maps done. Doing the challenges atm. Last night I finished getting Gold for 'least portals'.
Test #13 - 4
Test #14 - 2
Test #15 - 13
Test #16 - 2
Test #17 - 2
Test #18 - 14

Some of those were insanely hard. A lot of time spent trying and thinking of how to cover the most ground with the fewest portals. lol
Have yet to do any of them for 'least steps' or 'least time'.

Yeah, I"ll probably jump into the advanced levels at some point in time - glad to hear about Ep:3 not being the absolute last one there is, I love the HL series to death, think I'll spend some PTO and play through all of them sometime, with LotR playing in the background  cool

One other thought:  Where's Barney?
