about 2 weeks ago, a coworker of mine and me drove up to Minneapolis to see Rage Against the Machine.
it's a 7 hour drive from here, it rained plenty, but we made it.
before the concert, the police presence was noteworthy.
the distance between venues for the concert and the RNC was all of about 8 blocks.

thankfully the concert was ****s out awesome.
the band came out dressed in Gitmo gear, complete with bags over their heads.
they even performed the first song that way.
the set list was bar none grade A fantastic.
but back on rallying cry/point, and more to the point, why I waited so long to post this.

as the show ended, the lead singer said basically, "don't do anything. they expect you to do something. prove to them otherwise."
right when we walked out, there's about 100-200 cops outside in riot gear, carrying:
full body armor, ken-do stick batons, armed with rubber bullets and tear gas. so no, they were not messing around.
we spend the next few hours walking in and out of bars, taking in the nightlife.
but during the night, we see people being "talked to".
the cops are calling each other on their radios giving descriptions of people they want to detain.

it gets more bogus. we're walking back to the car, when a street is shut down between us and the hotel.
the cops have shut it down for arrests, about 100 people. my friend asked "why are they being arrested?"
cop - "don't know, we'll think of something". OHHHHHH really?
so we go another way, and find a news crew filming the incident and taking pictures.
it seems the paddy wagons were on the way, and so we booked out of there.

we go back to the hotel, where the parking lot is barren. could we get a room? nope.
booked. huh. go to another hotel. as we enter, a guy in a suit walks to the night clerk, points at us and shakes his head no.
that seemed odd. but again, the lot is empty, so there's sure to be a room available right? no.
this one didn't even check the computer, just said it like his life depended on it.

so rights aside, we're fubared. it's 4 in the morning, we've nowhere to go.
would the people of Minnesota hate us that much or is something else going on?
is it so wrong for concert folk and Republican folk to share the same hotel for the night?
we drive an hour outside of town, and surprise surprise. a motel that will take our American dollars. woohoo!
since then, I have been waiting for some kind of news story, a Daily show skit, something for some kind of coverage about this.
but since I got nothing, and the situation still rubs me raw, I'll just throw some links about it.
in a cathartic kind of way.

Nice Picture.

Nice Comments.

I can understand the strong police presence to diminish any possible trouble before it even begins.
Myself wanting to become a police officer, I know some of their procedures. Everything seemed fine until they blocked off all the streets. What did they expect to happen when they box in a crap load of people in one area. They are going to freak people out and people will get nervous. Seems very poorly uncordinated and planned. The bike police and mounted officers shouldn't of been brought in mass force unless trouble started to begin. Thats just way to much force for a peaceful crowd that didn't want trouble.

As far as the hotels not taking you in, if you had the money I'd sue the fuckers lol

Or the parking lot was empty because the republicans were out partying with all their lobbyists to the wee hours of the morning and those rooms were all booked solid.  The rooms probably were all reserved.  I wouldn't have even tried walking into a hotel in either Denver or Minneapolis during the national conventions.  That's like coming to Omaha during the college world series and trying to book a last minute room.  Not going to happen anywhere near the event.

see that's the problem that I should've went into more.
2 people entered the hotel right before we did.
they had press passes, didn't have a room, and got one.
so when it was our turn, guy in suit had previously intervened, and that was that.

The press probably had reserve rooms blocked off for their people.  ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN ect would have reserved 50 rooms and if only 30 press people showed up to claim the rooms the hotel still would have had to keep those 20 rooms open since the press is footing the bill even if they stay empty.

On point # 1, I have no doubt that the police went overboard...but that's probably what they had planned all along.  I saw an interview with the Mayor (a Dem, btw) a few days beforehand, and he was basically slobbering all over himself, pimping his city as being such a great host.  I equate this to how China took care of the protesters in/around the Olympics.  Basically, what the Mayor was saying with all the police was "hey, this is our time to shine -- we're not taking any crap off anyone -- the spotlight will only be a positive one".  Hence, the seemingly obvious over-zealous actions of the police.  Sure, they stirred up something that may have turned out to be nothing, but they did it on their terms, and kept it to a minimum.  Hence, they continued to get all that pub for their city.  Now they can use the convention as a selling point to all those future potential conventioneers.  "See what a great job we did with the GOP Convention...come to our great city!!"  It's all about the $$, caaash, scrilla, moolah, coin.

On point # 2, I tend to agree w/ Mr. Blim.  Members of the press (and conventioneers) probably had all the rooms booked -- just had to show their credentials to get a room.  The first open room to be found would have had to been out of town.  And if they looked at you with a screwy eye, it was probably the way you were dressed (if it was anything like how I would dress for a concert).  They would probably look at you the same way anytime you went in, not just during the convention.

For the record, I'm not defending any political party here...I hate em both!!  Proud "unaffiliated" voter here!!

I'm disapointed.  There hasn't been a good political sex scandal in months.
