this is a Bond film packed with more action than a giant-sized Bruce Lee vs Godzilla fight. seriously. this movie has car chases, chases on feet, boat chases, an aerial dog fight, and more explosions than the 4th of July at my house. which also says something. oh well. onto the spoilers -
the movie picks up right after the end of Casino Royale. the car chase is quite good. it turns out Mr. White is still evil and needs some interrogation. but before this can happen, an agent betrays them and shoots Mr. White out of there. after some blustering and sleuthing, Bond goes to Bolivia to track him down. where he meets "hot chick from Hitman" and helps her out via a boat chase. we meet the villain for the film, a not so nice guy named Greene.
aptly named, because his trademark is being the head of a pro-environmental company, but in the meantime committing crimes to exploit the natural resources of the planet. for shame. but guess what? we learn now what the film title means. the "Quantum" seems to be a 21st century version of "SPECTRE" as the cabal of villains gets found out. Bond is in too deep now, and recruits Mathis from the last film as he has nobody he can trust.
they go to Bolivia where we meet Agent Fields, where Bond seduces her with the lamest line ever "I can't find the stationary." ok, whatever. as the film goes on Bond is getting framed for the death of Mathis and Fields both. Fields dies in a way that has to be seen to be believed. remember Goldfinger? well replace a hot chick covered in gold paint with a hot chick covered in CRUDE OIL. ewwwww. moving on.
Felix comes back in this film and helps out Bond again. oh yeah the USA is involved. know why? there's oil to be had, so of course the CIA has to be secretly helping the bad guys. yeah, that's what I thought too. but it's their film, not mine; and Felix is awesome. but guess what? this film isn't all about American greed for oil, the British are greedy too. darn those British.
oh well. time for the "what a twist" moment. it turns out Greene and Quantum aren't in Bolivia for oil, they're going to introduce a water shortage instead, and then charge the government a huge sum by secretly tapping an underground fresh water supply. genius. we come to the huge fight scenes now at a compound for oil production in the middle of the desert. both hot chick and Bond end up getting their revenge, so they don't have any more time/reason for bumping pelvises. she goes her way, and Bond tracks down last loose end for M and rejoins MI:6. ah that's swell. for all the rage/revenge elements, some nice shoot em up action, and some stellar plot twists - I grant thee 9.12 smashies. it could have been longer, had more villain development, and better dialogue, but in the end - see this movie.
for those that did - 3 questions.
1) did you like it? 2) M gets shot it seemed, and then is all better?!? wtf? 3) does the elusively evil Mr. White come back in a trilogy to be the villain again?
