If any of you have ever played City of Heroes or City of Villains by the company Cryptic and liked it I can safely say you will absolutely love Champions.

This is of course another MMO. Its not fair to compare it to WoW but it can be compared on a small scale with some of the features. WoW is huge and has more complex mechanics to it but here is where Champions triumphs over WoW in certain aspects. Blocking, blocking in WoW is based off of a numbers game. The higher your percentages the more then likely when the "imaginary dice" roll you will be able to block most if not all the damage being pummeled to your face from an over sized behemoth that no other game has already done and has become so unorginal Zeus himself has proclaimed another end of the world and cried everyone to death by drowning them.

So lets do it this way if I am going to compare small aspects.

Blocking:

WoW - Numbers and percentages based off of gear that requires you to spend countless hours of your life running around in a virtual world where 80% of female characters are really men. (FAIL!)

Champions - Live action, bad guy charges up for a big attack obvious by noticeable comic like BAM "bubble" above his head and you hold down shift! OH SNAP! I BLOCKED IT WITH TIMING AND PERCISION! NUMBERS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! (WIN!)

Attacking:

WoW - Oh look I right click and every 1-4 seconds my guy auto attacks. Oh hey I can click more buttons too and fire off other things that are far more powerful...but wait...it has to be done in a certain rotation in order for me to have maximum DPS and thus earn higher rank and get better gear that I just wasted 6 hours of my evening on...oh shit I need the gear too! I could have the same exact build and rotation as that guy but because he has more time I will never match his DPS cause he gets the phat lewts! Darn. Wait shit adds! Or 'THAT GUY' died. "wipe it up!" Lets now spend another 15 minutes rebuffing, setting this back up, yelling at someone because they're human and are entitled to make mistakes! We praise you all mighty perfect being of WoW!!!!!!! *bows* (FAIL!)

Champions - Live action! Very few scripted encounters! No auto attacks! My one power that could potentially be considered an auto attack is weak!!! But its my energy builder! So I actually have to plan this out and then execute my strategy! Oh snap no set rotation!?!?! Because I chose my powers myself! From an almost endless amount of power combinations instead of skill trees?! OH SNAP ADDS! Wait just because theres so many more adds doesn't mean i'll wipe! If I quickly think of something I could live through this! My quick thinking and pure skill and higher intelligence let me out smart the AI even if my choice of powers was not the best way to go! NO WAY! (WIN!)

Healing:

WoW - Yeah we need a disc priest for this....sigh its doable with a holy but he has to be geared out more then 50 cents crib he never lives in and he can't be a dumb ass. Ok pallies, give kings to these guys, you do might...wait...hold on...we're missing kings over here, ugh JESUS CANT YOU LISTEN!!!! Druid your over healing cut back the healing save mana WHAT WHY WERENT YOU HEALING ME!!!! Ok MT healer...what happened? Yes I know I was crit for 50k...where was the heal? Yes I know my total HP is only 40k...still where was the heal? We need precisely 4 healers for this encounter guys...sorry only have 3! MORE HOTS! (FAIL!)

Champions - Hey look! We DO have healing powers but you know what...you can complete this game without any dedicated healers! NO-FUCKING-WAY! YA....WAI!!!!
Look our healers can deal damage and contribute too! Better yet! They can be top DPSers ANNNNNND pop a heal on someone too! Woooooooooooooooow! Ya it was all a matter of just choosing a healing power from another power pool...look too I went into 5 different power pools and I am still effective! You mean you're playing the game the way YOU want to without having to be dedicated to something specific and still being a GREAT asset to the team! Ya! HEAVEN AND HELL THIS IS AWESOME! (WIN!)

Characters:

WoW - Oh look, 6 different faces, hair styles, skin colors and facial features that put me at odds of looking exactly like the next 1 out of 10 people that happens to be playing too. Oh wait...the armor looks the same too, absolutely no differences except its red or blue stating "HEY! That guy is sliiiiightly more powerful then you because his peni....guild is bigger then yours. (FAIL)

Champions - HOLY FUCK WHAT HAPPENED! Someone took every comic book in the world, threw the costumes in a blender and hit hyper drive. (10pm) I...I....I just can't decide! So many choices! (1am) Oooookay finally my character looks exactly the way I want him to look! Man hes fucking cool! WHAT I spent 3 hours doing that...wait...that was actually fun! I'm so unique!!! One of a kind! WAIT THAT GUY LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE ME! SAME LOOK! Maaaaaan....wait...heh totally different colors then me, its cool Sup bro...yeah, you know the style! HOLY CRAP! I can make a story for my character too that other people can read?!?! SWEET! (WIN!)

Over all WoW is more massive and has way more content then Champions. I won't say because of an obvious reason that WoW has been out for almost 6 years and Champions was just released. But when WoW began it already had more content then champions did and does. Champions offers a lot of perks over most of the MMO's out there. It's different then City of Heroes based on the fact that there actually is gear now but nothing like WoW. It's just added accessories that raise certain stats on your character and have no effect on how your character looks except for weapons with things called power replacers, which based off the powers you choose you will have to raise accordingly to make sure your powers are effective. It adds a level of high flexibility rather then WoW's linear ways of building your character. In other words, WoW is a popular amusement park rides waiting line. You sit there for hours and the result is always the same. Champions on the other hand is like The Simpsons. Its different every episode with a uniquely written story and actually has a point to it.

Champions wins in flexibility, allowing you to play how ever you like to your hearts content with very little to no linear aspects of the game. You can log in for an hour or even 30 minutes, get something accomplished that actually progresses your character and then call it a night. Its player base is more mature and intelligent as a whole then the WoW community. To sum it up, Champions remains fun. Unlike WoW which will glimmer for a while in the darkest of nights and then fade out leaving you wondering why you even renewed your subscription in the first place only to renew it again 4 months later because you are bored. Oh and a plus! Champions content/expansions...are free! One would argue with CoH and CoV that they are not. CoV was a game in its self. Not technically an expansion, although it added in the capabilities for people who played CoH to build super group bases but did not require you to get to continue to advance in the game. I imagine they will implement something similar with Champions. Another plus about champions is their content updates are generally every 1-3 months. It was just released in September of this year and on the 27th this month we will be seeing not only the halloween events but more permanent content plus a completely new power set.

I give Champions Online a fair and firm rating of 9.2 out of 10.

I swear its like this bastards have something in my head that's telling them exactly what I want in an MMO.

WoW - Bigger, not better, not stronger. (FAIL!)

Champions - Smaller, better, stronger. (WIN!)

Thanks for giving a nice, in depth review on the Champions game. I thought about giving it a go when it goes down a tad in the price department.

How long have you been playing? I can tell you enjoy it so far Wink What is the subscription fees like? Initial cost is still $50, right?

I read a review of this game when it came out, and the main point that the reviewer made was that there wasn't much to do other than level up your character. And for that reason, he gave it a pretty average score.

But the thing about young MMOs is that they have a lot of catching up to do, content-wise. In time, I'm sure we'll see this grow into a beast of a game.

I started playing about a month ago. I was being very sarcastic in my comedic sort of way with the review. I can touch on a couple more details.

What Grizzly said is true, there is not a ton to do in the game right now and PvP is a joke. If you are not a ranged class you're screwed! They need to fix PvP, unfortunately to do so means major changes to all the current power sets to balance it out, which would drasticly change PvE as well. However Champions is primarily a PvE game.

There's differences with missions then from City of Heroes. CoH use to be all instanced missions. You would go into the sewers, a cave or a warehouse and a science lab and do your mission. There was difficulty sliders, the leader of the team set the difficulty and the sliders worked also by how many were in your group and the levels of the people in the group. You could side kick which would take someone of a lower level and raise them to 1 level below the person side kicking them allowing you to play at that level but only with your current powers. There was also exemplar which did the opposite. Lowered a higher levels, level down to the lower level.

Champions just has sidekick which works both ways. This allows you to play with your friends should you not be the same level or out of the level range so you do not hinder their experience. Now with the missions, there are instanced missions but most of the missions are open world like WoW. It's not stream lined like WoW, there are zones. But to counter the effect of so many people being in one zone at a time it lags you out, its split up to many different servers. 100 people per zone. And when you are zoning into a new zone you get a list of all the active servers for that zone and how many people are in it. It will also tell you if someone on your friend list is there, in your supergroup or on your team so you can go to the correct zone if you are teamed or just want to physically meet up with someone. You can change the instance server of that zone at any time out of combat. There are no difficulty sliders now. Instances are set and built the way they wanted it to be built and how hard it will be.

As for content, yes all there is to do right now is to level your character and run instances to get better accessories. It works a little like wow in the fashion that there is better accessories used with the whole color system. White, Green, yellow, blue, orange, purple ect... The thing about only being able to level your character is its done in a better fashion then WoW with how the game plays out. Yeah its grinding and turning in missions but its a lot easier to do. You enter the game with the choice to go through the tutorial and learn the basics. Or you can go right to the crisis and gain an automatic 5 levels that you would have gained in the tutorial. You are awarded a travel power right after the tutorial so traveling is easy. But as I stated, Cryptic is quick to add in more content and you will find that constantly doing missions is actually way more fun then in WoW given the extreme flexibility to play your character how ever you want to. Also you are allowed I believe 8 or 10 character slots and let me tell you. Making new characters, testing them out and creating stories is half the fun of the game. You can generally tell within the first 10 levels of that power set if you will like it or not and can delete him or keep him. Currently the level cap is set to 40. CoH and CoV never went over level 50 in the cap. Cryptic countered never raising the level cap by focusing on new gameplay in encounters and just quite frankly....lots of encounters with super villains. They challenged and strained all the possible combinations of power sets by making all of the main content very difficult but yet not frustrating. Another cool thing they added in Champions is things called Perks. Think achievements in WoW. but instead of just pointless points you get to spend these points on new costume pieces or accessories. The costume pieces are interesting, you have to complete THAT perk and have the points to unlock a certain piece that you will see NPC's and Mobs wearing. So instead of just leveling your character it gives you something to work towards if you really want that costume for your character.

As for builds its interesting how it works. You are allowed to set your character for offense, defense, balanced, or support. Going into a different mode has pros and cons. Offense means you do more damage but practically makes you paper thin, going into this mode requires a tank built character that knows how to keep aggro. Defense explains its self, less damage dealt but your defensive abilities are superior. Balanced...do I have to explain that? Support, if you have support type powers like Debuffing, buffs or healing it enhances those powers but also lowers your damage done and physical defense. You get a total of 5 builds which unfortunately doesn't let you pick new powers for each one, but does allow you to swap out accessories for which build will best suit different stats. You can also make several costumes and if you want you can link certain costumes to certain builds if you want a specific look to the roll you are full filling. Obviously certain powers need certain stats. You can decide if you want to go pure and just stick to every single power in that specific power pool you picked or you can go hybrid and space it out between as many power pools as you want. It's important you read power discriptions though because certain powers enhance with different stats. So lets give a scenario. I choose a melee type power set which will base its damage off of strength and dex, but I decide to pick some defensive powers that will build off of constitution (stamina) and endurance. I stay in my balanced build but now I have to choose which accessories I want to wear...do I go all strength and dex and be nothing but DPS and my defensive powers will not be as useful as they could be...or do I actually balance my stats out with different accessories. The choices are almost limit less and it really comes down to how you want to play your character. It is possible to gimp your characters but even gimped characters still remain an asset to the team. It's Cryptics way of catering to the casual gamer while still giving those hard core gamers their fix of immersion from reality to fantasy.

Penalty for dying. The accessories do not have durability so you don't have to pay anything for dying. The more you complete missions and stay alive you earn stars, up to 5. After two stars are earned you start doing bonus damage and healing. When you die or get knocked out, what ever your imagination is telling you what happened you are restored at a spawn point and half or all of your star is now missing, lowering your bonus damage but never taking you into the negatives in damage, meaning you never do below the amount of damage your powers dish out.

As for cost, the game is still $50 with the first month free play. After its just like WoW. $14.99 per month with the option of saving money for paying ahead of time. I.E 3 months or 6 months.

Champions fits a casual gamer very well as I explained in the previous post. You can actually sign on for 30 minutes, progress your character and enjoy yourself. There is no raiding and finding groups for tougher missions or missions recommending multiple people are easy to find. There are countless story arches. There are "gathering" missions like HEY GO KILL 15 OF THOSE GUYS! Or RETRIEVE 20 OF THOSE THINGS! But if you read all the mission descriptions and follow the story arch its like reading a mini comic book while playing the game. They all have unique stories to them and let you use your imagination.

Sounds fun. I do have CoH, but I didn't really get into it because I didn't have anyone to play with anymore. I did 1 mission with a couple of friends, and we had a blast together. I think that's really the best time you can have in an MMO.

So whether it's Champions, or DCU Online, or the next Star Wars MMO, etc., whichever one other people are excited about is the one I want to play.
