THIS is a comic book based film you can like. forget Kick Ass. if you've ever read that source material, you'd understand how that movie blows. THIS movie however - muy bueno!
we open with an interesting poker game turned military op turned assassination turned get away chase. so in essence, it grabs your attention is what I'm saying. and on the off chance it doesn't, what happens next in the helicopter sure will.
see the big bad here is a shadow/spook named Max. as in "Maximum sadistic, evil set to Maximum, but funny settings are over the Max". you don't want to like the bad guy, but you almost do because he's so damned funny at it.
so our 5 left for dead soldiers and financier chica go about to take Max down. you realize that these guys have families too, and in showing their traits/quirks/personal lives/etc, you get even more action comedy out of it. for instance, I too am of the belief - don't touch the hat. one stand out scene in particular - "I have telekinetic bullets." and they work too. go Petunias! (stay after the credits for additional scenes).
of course it's not an action movie without your standard betrayal, Max is developing bombs kind of send off, but it's good. it has the humor of The Hangover, action such as in Die Hard, and the chick from the Star Trek remake in it. so what's not to like? something for everybody. I dub thee - 9.08 smashies.
