I got into the beta for this game and played it last night and was really impressed. A lot of role choices for the 4 classes as you're basically picking your own 3 talent trees that you want to be. You can take a look at a role builder and mess around with that.

Doing quests was actually pretty painless as on the map it will show you available quest givers to talk with, accepting a quest will then show you an area to go to for what you need to complete for the quest and then show you where to go back to to turn in the quest. Playstyle / button layout is like WoW but graphics aren't as polished as they could be but that may be due to the beta.

Worth checking out if they have another beta coming out and I can drop some keys off if I receive. This is on a maybe list for picking it up providing there is some free time in my schedule =)

A friend and I are also playing it.

Tip: if you have a choice between beta keys, get the VIP keys since they're supposed to allow for access to ALL the betas until release. The others do not.

Anyways, I've got a couple nights in and have found it enjoyable. Unfortunately the draw of the story is lacking since it's entirely new and no earlier games to be based on (like WoW or Warhammer had). It's got a lot of the ease of recent WoW and skips right over the early troubles that Warcraft had in developing the UI. Seems to have some server instability issues but it's pretty well expected of MMO's in beta/initial release when you start throwing a lot more players in like they did for this round.

I only have WoW/Warhammer to draw experience from, but I find the general Warcraft feel to it + the randomized Warhammer public group events to be quite well done for the early levels. Of course I'm but a level 12 rogue hunter, but have hope for a good late-end game experience (warhammer was a huge let down as I never even got to 40 before friends and I retired.)

My first char is Taline, but am likely to make another just to see what other classes may be like for fun.

Anyone picking this up?  If you pre-order you get to start playing tomorrow at Noon.  I will be creating a character on Briarcliff - PvP.

I bought and will likely be playing on Deepstrike or Lotham (can't decide). Sucks that everyone I know playing is scattered across servers.

Any reviews?   Good?  Bad?   WoW is getting a bit not-so-wow at the moment.

IGN does a "review in progress" for MMOs now,  which just means that they an extra long time to explore all the different elements of gameplay before giving it a final score. At the time I'm writing this, the review isn't finished yet.

Im curious about this game. I don't want to buy it just to find out it's another WoW Clone with different graphics and powers like so many games out there. So far all I hear is just that and even that combat is clunky..... Any other opinions....non biased btw. Give it a fair review.

IGN posted its review and gave it a 8.5, not too shabby.  I havent played an MMO in 4 years, nothing out currently interests me.

I hate that label, but for the sake of convenience as a reference point, yes, it is a "WoW clone" but with many improvements.  WoW clones are where the main market is for mmorpgs, so if you're looking for a niche mmorpg, try Darkfall.  Most people that play Darkfall not looking for a WoW clone don't like it because it doesn't hold your hand through the game.

Probably my most favorite part of Rift is class customization.  There are 4 classes - each class has 8 different class trees to pick from in a spec to combine.  So at any time you can have any 3 of 8 in a spec from your class, and you can have up to 4 specs at a time.    For example, running a 5man group we got to the last boss in a dungeon and couldn't defeat him because we were short aoe heals for that encounter that needed it.  Two people changed their roles before the next attempt and we defeated him.  It allows that kind of versatility in an instance without anyone having to leave or respec at a trainer.  Every class is able to perform at least two roles such as heals, dps, and tank.

I am enjoying the game quite a bit but if you're looking for something different, this is not it.

So I caved and it is downloading as we speak.

Where is everyone playing? Gotta pick a server in about 2 hours :-p

And also how well established is everyone. I was hoping to get involved in an active and helpful guild.

Defient or Guardians? I was thinking about building a Warrior, Paladin, VoidKnight, warlord.
