Review (with SPOILERS)
know that day, Thursday? ever wonder who that was named after? that would be THOR, Norse God of Thunder and Lightning. he's been based in a comic now since about 1960 or so, and he is now in said film, which is pretty entertaining from start to finish. we start out introducing the big bad Frost Giants, who get stomped royally by "the All-Father" Odin, Thor's father. years pass, and now it's time for Thor to take the throne. some hi-jinx always get in the way of these things, so now Thor is banished to Earth. in comes the love interest, who finds Thor in the middle of the desert.
remember the after credits ending of Iron Man 2? the giant hammer in the desert? that would be Thor's, and the source of most of his powers. in exchange for knowing how Thor got here (a wormhole from the Rainbow Bridge), Jane agrees to help Thor get his hammer back. no sexual innuendo there.
meanwhile, back in the godly home of Asgard: Loki, Thor's adopted brother, is taking over! down with Odin! down with rules! up with horns! up with Frost Giant trickery! up with the Destroyer! the Destroyer is a "supposedly" unstoppable suit of armor, sent after Thor to kill him and his friends, Lady Sif and the Warriors 3. Thor sacrifices himself against the Destroyer, showing himself to be a worthy and true heir to the throne now. this act breaks the magic spell on the hammer, and it's time for a beat down on the Destroyer, caused by Thor's restored powers.
Loki is now going to wipe out the Frost Giants to prove himself worthy as king. Thor will have none of that, and now it's time for the final showdown. insert guitar twangs here. Thor, proving himself worthy once again, sacrifices himself again by destroying the Bridge, only to be saved by Odin. by doing so, Thor can't come back to Earth, so poor love sick Jane has to figure out a new way to get Thor back to Earth. cue the soon to be sequel ending credits. but stay after the credits, for some apparently Avengers to be news. and some damn fine spoilerage it is.
further details: the cast is rock solid, from the top on down. Odin is perfect, Thor is perfect, and so on. the visuals in 3-D are worthy, but some might find it headache inducing. but it's juicy to look at, like the Rainbow Bridge. keep an extra eye out for what's in Odin's Throne Room. nice weapon collection, especially if you read comics. also - keep an eye out for a certain bowman. a certain Clint Barton. a certain Avenger if you will. all right, it's HAWKEYE already. classic.
definitely worth a look, if you like the book, or are just waiting for the Avengers. rating: 9.35 smashies.
