Review (with Spoilers):
As the film begins in the present day, scientists in the Arctic uncover Captain America's shield. Flashback time! In 1942, the Nazi officer Red Skull and his men invade a castle in Norway, to steal the cosmic cube. And like any good Nazi, he lies to get it. Back in the good ol' USA, young Steve Rogers is rejected for World War II duty. This does not stop him from lying over and over again to try to register. Rogers' conviction about serving his country catches the attention of scientist Dr. Erskine, who recruits Rogers to a special outfit of the US Army. Let the comedy begin. Like any good summer action movie, you got to have action AND comedy, and the comedy here is pure gold such as the flag scene, or grenade scene. But it's not all funny time, as the Red Skull and his big bootlegger lackey Arnim Zola have figured out how to harness the power of the cosmic cube.
Thankfully, in a secret lab, Erskine's experiment to create a "super soldier" is underway, and Rogers is today's big winner. And I do mean bigger because Rogers emerges from a chamber taller and very muscular. And now he gets to show off his new abilities as an assassin kills Erskine. But Cap tracks him down and puts him in his place. Dead.
In the worst part of the movie, Cap is now relegated to selling War Bonds. Important in real life - yes. Important in an action film - no. These 10 minutes or so could have easily been cut and the film would've been better for it. During his show tour, Cap hears his best friend Bucky is among a number of soldiers captured by the Red Skull, so Cap sneaks behind enemy lines for a solo rescue mission. Breaking into what turns out to be a base for the Skull's private terrorist group, HYDRA, he frees Barnes and the others and briefly confronts the Skull. Secrets revealed time! The Red Skull was Erskine's first super-solider before the scientist escaped. The Skull and Zola retreat, and Rogers returns the men to base.
Cap gets a shield made of vibranium *insert level up sound from WoW here * and is now off to destroy HYDRA's bases. He's very good at it, and the montage turns out ok. On the way to the last base, Cap and Bucky zipline onto a train transporting Zola; but during the battle, Bucky falls off into a deep gorge. Oh no! Our hero's motivation is now doubled - check. Cap leads our boys into the final Hydra base and thus the ending of our film. After much kicking of ass and shield slinging, our climactic ending is going airborn! The Red Skull was going to use the cube's energy to bomb the US (and then other capitals around the world) but not on Cap's watch. He sneaks onto the plane and confronts the Skull. After a short, but I can live with that kind of fight, the Skull attempts to use the cube but instead disintegrates into outer space. The cube melts through the plane and falls to Earth. Cap, being the selfless guy he is, pilots the dying plane down into the Arctic ocean, presumably dying a hero's death.
But wait! In present time, Rogers awakens in a room designed to appear as if it were from the 1940s. Deducing the truth and escaping to Times Square, Cap learns from Nick Fury that he has been asleep for 70 years, and they had wanted to acclimate his reentry into modern times. The movie ends with a very sad line, as Cap missed out on his date to go dancing. Awww.
Closing Thoughts: This cast was perfect. Stanley Tucci does a GREAT Dr. Erskine, the Howard Stark character is a funny drunk (some of the best lines from the film come from him), Peggy Carter comes across as both sexy and bad ass. Hugo Weaving does a good Red Skull, Chris Evans does a better Captain America to be sure. But the best one by far was Tommy Lee Jones as the hard nosed colonel. He makes so many good lines, both funny and dramatic, you want him to start throwing the shield too. The background is very respectable of the 1940's USA and Europe, good job there.
Also be on the look out for loving references to Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark while watching this film. And yes, stick around for the Avengers trailer at the end. See how many characters you can spot. As for the Red Skull being transported into space - I think he's going to be found by the villain for the Avengers film. I suspect - only a guess - but it's going to be Thanos. In Marvel comics, 3 big villains are obsessed with the thing. Loki - got him in Thor, so check. The Red Skull - check. Thanos - not yet. But if the Red Skull just happens to get teleported to a planet known as Titan, and spills his guts to get home, say to a mad god known as Thanos...then check. smashie rating - 9.06.
