Sucker Punch is a movie I've been waiting on since...perhaps forever. I remember seeing the trailer about 7 months ago, and I was hooked ever since. the movie premise is very simple - our hero Baby Doll has been set up for a murder she didn't commit. she has 5 days to escape the insane asylum, or a lobotomist is going to do her in and her evil step dad will get the inheritance. then the really interesting happens. she puts her mind into another world. a world filled with ninjas, zombies, dragons, and a brothel. she recruits the other girls to help her escape, and to do so they need to collect a unique list of items.
so in her mind, she hypnotizes people with her dancing, which while it teleports her down the rabbit hole into fantasy world even more, her girl friends can get the escape items. the items are a map, fire, a knife, a key, and a mysterious fifth object that only she will know about. to get them, they have to fight samurai, zombies, dragons, and robots; your standard level of most awesome things ever. the action scenes take place in some really nice venues, such as a Medieval fortress, a Shinto temple, a Bullet train and even a battle of the First World War. the CGI and visuals of this movie are so good I can't do them justice in describing them.
it's not all for the guys though. this film has female empowerment and the fight for freedom as the main themes. nothing says "Ladies, come watch this" like a film about a woman taking control of their own destiny. granted it's a trip through her ID, but it's a chick film at heart all the same. onto the big spoilers/big finish:
see this in IMAX, it's worth it. also, get the soundtrack, you'll be hooked after watching this film. this film is like a better version of Identity. it's got the real world vs mentally imagined world themes and plays them against each other. sadly, this is a movie not for critics, they won't get it and clearly don't get it if you see the "professional" reviews. it's a Grindhouse situation. an action flick, out before Easter, doesn't do well at the box office. the other thing - Sweat Pea has a GIANT broadsword on her back, yet never used it. it's a Chekhov gun. I'd also have kept the other women/personalities alive, though 1 does get to go free. both literally and figuratively as the map, fire, key, knife, and sacrifice in the dream world were used in the real world for our escapee. I really enjoyed this film, especially the last quote/thought: we already possess all the tools we need to change the world. we just have to use them. powerful stuff. therefore - 9.28 smashies.
